My incredible trip to Iceland!

Iceland is like nowhere I have ever been before! It’s perfect for people looking for the unexpected.

Located between the North Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean Iceland is the most sparsely populated country in Europe and in-fact two thirds of the population live in Reykjavik and the surrounding areas! Iceland is volcanically and geologically active, remember the ash cloud a few years ago which grounded all air travel for over 2 weeks?

My cruise started in Copenhagen. We visited Akureyri, Isafjord and Reykjavik

Akureyri, is a beautiful village surrounded by high mountains offering spectacular views from the ship. I was surprised how mild the temperature was especially when the city is located less than 60 miles from the Arctic Circle! A local said that Akureyri is almost always several degrees higher than in Reykjavik and less windy. Many people from Reykjavik actually fly in here to spend the weekend to enjoy the nicer weather!

We visited Godafoss which is considered one of Iceland’s most beautiful waterfalls and is only in 30 minute drive from Akureyri.

Also known as “The Fall of the Gods”, the water drops about 12 meters in two horseshoe shaped falls. It really is spectacular!

Here are some photos…

A few miles east is the Namaskard region with bubbling mud pots, steam vents and fumaroles (an opening in the earth’s crust usually near volcanoes which emits steam and gases)

The landscape is full of color, lots of yellow, brown, and black. It is the strangest place I have ever been. Have a look for yourself…

Our next stop was Islafjord which is the region of unspoilt wilderness!
Fishing has been the main industry in and the town has one of the largest fisheries in Iceland, however most of the region is uninhabited.
You can learn about Iceland’s only native animal; the Arctic Fox during a visit to the charming village of Sudavik
The scenery is beautiful, take a look…

Our final stop was Reykjavik which is the country’s capital.

We visited The Blue Lagoon which is a large pool of hot water which is rich in minerals like silica, algae and sulphur. The water is lovely and warm. Don’t get your hair wet! Mine was like cardboard for the rest of the cruise!

Wooden boxes containing silica mud can be found around the lagoon. Apply it to your face and body for a natural deep cleanse! It exfoliates and naturally strengthens the skin to make it glow! What a lovely smooth complexion we had after!

Midlina is a line along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge separating the Europe and the North America tectonic plates.

The tectonic plates move apart by 2 cm every year!
