Cruise line scraps free room service!

Last week Carnival cruise line scrapped free room service across their fleet if you order after 10 pm.

Ordering food after 10 pm would ring alarm bells to me.. A quick snack after a few drinks maybe?

They have extended their menu to offer a much better selection of meals and snacks including pizza, sandwiches and desserts.

You will still be able to order a continental breakfast with no extra charges.

I love ordering breakfast on room service especially on the last day when everyone is leaving the ship. I prefer not to get caught up in the crowds.  

I wonder if these new charges will these charges reduce the amount of wasted food on cruise ships?  Who orders food after 10 pm? Maybe if you skipped dinner or just want a snack. I think most will be a drunken order and let’s face it, we always order too much!

How many times have you ordered room service and then left most of it? I don’t think you would order so much if you had to pay for it!

Most cruisers will eat 3 meals a day so if you are on a ship with 2000 other passengers, that’s 6000 meals per day plus maybe a snack or 2.

A recent survey said that approx 200 grammes of food is wasted per person.

After further investigation, most cruise lines are getting better at estimating how much food they will need for the duration of a cruise and try to combine dry and long life food options. Wasted food = lost revenue so getting hot on this must be important to most cruise lines.

At dinner, I always feel that quality is more important than quantity Breakfast and lunch is different. I see so much food being left because we overindulge!

It has been recoreded that waste can be as high as 30% and you will be pleased to know that most cruise ships sort the waste into non perishable. Then the food is pureed into fish food!

Phew! This is fantastic! I feel a bit better now!
