It’s all Greek to me!

I am learning Greek.

This isn’t something I expected to do this year but that’s what life is all about isn’t it? Grab the chances whilst you can, try something new. You’ll never know if you like it till you try. I love learning languages and trained years ago as an interpreter but it’s been a long time since I have attempted a new one and the first time I’ve attempted one with a completely different alphabet.

So how did this come about? I do some voluntary work each week as a befriender and spend lovely afternoons drinking tea and chatting to wonderful but sadly very lonely older people. One lady who I started to visit in early January is a real inspiration as she is teaching herself Russian from books and she is nearly 90!! She is Greek and has lived in England for nearly 70 years and we are both having a lot of laughs trying to get me to pronounce more than the well known options on an average  menu in Corfu.

Now I don’t think I would have ever signed up for a course in Greek at evening school for example so I was lucky that I met someone happy to teach me in a social environment.

This got me thinking about all the things I have been fortunate to try on my travels from wine tasting to trapeze and quad biking. Many of these on cruises. There are always new things to learn or try if you fancy giving them a go.

My latest on a cruise was Chinese brush art on Fred Olsen in November and I have since been given a set of brushes and inks for Christmas and dabbled at home.

I painted this!

I painted this!

Over the years I have juggled, trapezed ( of sorts-I really wasn’t very good at that), danced, learnt card games, carved fruit………

That's me (not!!)

That’s me (not!!)

That's NOT me either!!

That’s NOT me either!!

What have you tried?? I’d love to know.
