Italian Getaway Part 2

Whilst in Sorrento we wanted to visit the many tourist sites we could. Last time I told you about Sorrento  and Capri. This time let me tell you about Pompeii, Positano and Amalfi..

We booked an excursion to Positano and Amalfi by boat. The coast line is stunning well worth visiting by sea. However you can visit both by bus which will take you down the famous Amalfi drive if windy roads close to the edge of the cliff are your thing. Also you can go by local ferry it will take you there from the port of Sorrento or even Naples.

Positano is a picture postcard town which is built up the hillside an array of colorful buildings. The small beach front is lined with restaurants. The winding streets behind lead upwards giving views over to Capri, It’s a picture postcard town which is well worth a visit. Amalfi isn’t as pretty from the sea front however it has lots of streets behind with plenty of shops restaurants and places to get delicious gelato! There is a beautiful cathedral that dates back to 9th century. It’s a full day visiting both and its definitely worth it.

Our trip to Pompeii was an experience we took the  local train which was only a few euros. You couldn’t really see where you were going as the windows were covered in graffiti. We had been told about pickpockets however we didn’t see anything however it’s like most cities just be on your guard. We purchased our tickets and with map and guide book in hand set off to explore! It’s a strange experience to think that these buildings and even bodies have been buried after a catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. The site is huge you can hire a guide or a headset tour if you prefer to do your own thing. My husbands was over the moon when he came across the Pink Floyd exhibit that was in the Amphitheater, as they had performed there in 1971. Pompeii is a must if your in this area. It’s an amazing site.

We still have  unfinished business in this area we didn’t make it to Mt Vesuvius or Herculaneum. It’s nice to have a reason to go back somewhere. Next time we may visit as a port of call.

Have you been to Naples on a cruise ship or stayed in the Sorrento area what was your favorite part? I’d love to hear.

Thanks for reading
