Drinks Packages – value for money or just encourage alcoholism?

One of the questions I am frequently asked when making a booking is, if there are any drinks packages included in the cruise and if not what is the price to purchase one?

Often
when people hear the price to purchase one they change their minds and decide they can’t consume the amount of alcohol required to get their monies worth and choose to purchase drinks separately.

So with Royal Caribbean announcing some changes to their drinks packages this week I thought I would take a closer look at the value aspect. Drinks packages are mainly offered by the American cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean, Celebrity
Cruises, NCL and Carnival. But you can also purchase them on Oceania Cruises, MSC and Costa. Most of the cruise lines will offer a soda/soft drinks package even if they don’t have an alcohol package such as P&O Cruises and Cunard.
When I cruise my partner doesn’t drink alcohol so for him we purchase a soda package and this has seemed to be good value for money when the charge is around $7 a day and to purchase a glass of coke on its own is about $3-4.
So each cruise line offers different packages with different inclusions so you always need to check fully which one you are signing up for: Some examples are as follows:

Looking at the Royal Caribbean packages to break even on the packages you need to drink the following: Select package =  5 glasses of wine a day or 6 beers a day, Premium = 6 cocktails a day or or 5 glasses of higher value wine, and on the Ultimate you need to drink 7 cocktails a day or 6 glasses of wine a day !!

MSC drinks are about 4.50 Euros for a bottle of beer (about £4) and wine is about 4 Euros (about £3.50) so on the Allegrissimo you would need to have 5 beers a day to break even.

After reading those above figures, an alcohol drinks package if I was paying would be not be of good value to me – I would not be able to consume that amount of alcohol a day on a 7-14 night cruise and would end up making myself ill. If one was free with the cruise then I wouldn’t turn it down.

Check the small print – often many cruise lines will say if one person in the cabin is purchasing a drinks package so does everyone else in the cabin. So bear this in mind if not everyone wants one or will make use of it.

Have you purchased any drinks packages and had full value from it? Did you wish you had or hadn’t purchased one once you were on board? Would love to hear your thoughts.
