Well I am back from my travels around the Fjords and I loved it. Flam has a very special wow factor that I wanted to share with you . For a small town there is plenty to fill your day. The train ride up the mountains is truely spectacular.
The train its self was a very pretty and comfortable wooden carriage train, with reassuringly 5 sets of brakes ,that individually can stop the train. (there are some very steep bits!). This can be booked independently for approx £40 per person depending on the exchange rate, But get there early, it is usually sold out for the full day by 11am. The waterfall was beautiful unfortunately still a bit frozen when we visited . I am planning a revisit later next year. (will not be the same with out the fab company !)
The town of Flam itself is simply stunning with its wooden shops and Viking bar , (a must try , they brew their own beer up to 8%) and a museum that tells you the history of the train line and the town. There are plenty of tourist shops to obtain that must have fridge magnet, troll or keyring. Do not forget if you buy anything of value ( beautiful jumpers, deer skins and beautiful glass sculptures) to claim your tax back on the last day in Norway, they usually bring the girls on board the ship and they sort for you or there is a shop in the last port of call.
In the port,of Flam, you really feel like the ship is docked in someone’s back garden, with stunning views . The people there were lovely and everyone spoke perfect English, do not forget to try the fabulous crepes with strawberry jam and sour cream , they truly are to die for!!! You can take yourself off and hike the hills if you are feeling energetic, a couple of guys on our cruise did 14km !!
So finally must sees : Waterfall and railway, must do’s : visit viking pub and try the crepes and must haves : two very special people to share it with, thanks Suzannah and Tom. xx Oh and my hubby of course x
