Too big?

The bigger is beter policy seems to be the way that most cruise lines are going at the moment. Each cruise company seems to be launching their biggest and best ships to date. But can this continue? Exactly just how big can cruise ships get?

We know that the bigger the ship the more passengers that will be on-board but also the more facilities and WOW features can be provided. But at what cost?

For those of you that have sailed on one of the mega ships, how did you find the service? Was the food you had as good as you expected? Was the ship too busy?

These questions can be asked about the experience on-board, but what about the effect on your itinerary? Most of the larger ships seem to base themselves in the Western Mediterranean or Caribbean, but this does limit your port of call choice somewhat. Is this something that is important when you decide which cruise to book or are you more focused on what to expect on-board.

I have seen more and more people asking for cruises around the Eastern Mediterranean taking in the East Coast of Italy, Croatia and Greece, but the choice is very limited. Smaller ships limit the cabin availability on these cruises especially during school holidays. With the focus on building larger ships for most companies, unfortunately a lot of ports in this part of the world are unable to accommodate such large vessels.

So the question I have is what would like to see? Carry on building the Mega-ships with cruise firsts, such as the first roller coaster at sea to name just one? Or would you rather companies focus on the smaller ship with itinerary intensive sailings and fantastic ports of call, untouchable service levels on-board and amazing food? Comment away and lets see what the general consensus is.

Leading on to the MSC Bellissima trip I was supposed to be on. Unfortunately I fell ill (man flu) so was unable to attend. However those that did have absolutely raved about this new ship. Have a look and see for yourself with this official video from MSC below.
