Are you a ‘port collector’?

One of my colleagues and I have a bit of a standing joke when we go off on a cruise. If it includes a port that we haven’t visited before we say we are going to put a flagpole in the ground there to mark the fact that we have been there, a bit like the astronauts who landed on the moon. As I say, it’s just a bit of a joke between us but actually we find it really exciting to be visiting somewhere that we haven ‘t been before as I expect many other people do.

Now we generally go on a cruise as guests of the cruise lines so we do not get to chose the itinerary but those of you who chose your cruises, how do you plan them? Do you just book a Med cruise in the summer or a Caribbean cruise in the winter in order to get some sunshine or do you look at the itinerary and chose one that includes lots of ports that you haven’t visited before. In other words, is destination or sunshine more important to you? Are you a port collector?

Do you keep a tally of your ports visited in any way? Maybe a map on the spare bedroom wall with coloured pins in it or do you mark off your ports on an online map? Maybe you have a good old-fashioned globe and stick little flags in it?

Do you know that some people in the US have maps painted on the doors of their vehicles with the states they have visited painted in. Quirkey!

I’m really interested to know if there are people who ‘collect ports’. Is this you? I would really welcome any feedback, even photos of how you ‘record’ the ports you have visited. Click on comments to let me know or email me at [email protected].
