Location, Location, Location!

Cabin location can be quite a major factor when booking your cruise.  How do you know if you have never cruised before where on the ship you should stay?  Should I be on a low deck or a high deck?
Cabins on lower decks on the ship are normally the least expensive.  The lower cabins will have less movement if on rough sea but will be further away from pool decks and lounges for you to walk.   You will find that the lower deck cabins will be more prone to engine noise and anchor noise.  Cabins at the front of the ship can sometimes be rather noisy when the anchor is dropped.  No need for a morning alarms with these cabins!  The newer ships however will have less engine noise on the lower decks but you still won’t solve the anchor noise.

Cabins on higher decks do usually cost quite a bit more or are suite accommodations.  These are a lot closer to the pool and sun decks but you will probably come across quite a bit of movement in rough weather.  The smaller the ship the more movement may occur.
Midship cabins always go down well with lots of my clients.  They say less motion in the centre and you are never too far from any of the amenities.  These cabins are great for people prone to sea sickness and people who have mobility problems.  Sometimes though midship cabins can be quite noisy with people moving through the hallways.
Forward cabins right at the front of the ship will have the most movement.  These are for the “real” sailors.  The cabins here can defiantly be an experience in rough seas.  The windows on the cabins at the forward of the ship do tend to be smaller and slanted so you won’t see as much.  A lot of cruise companies put suites at the front of the ship to make use of the unusual shape and to offer passengers larger balconies.
Cabins at the read (Aft) are where you will find your larger balconies.  These cabins look out the rear of the ship.  They provide a great view of where you have sailed.  The cabins will have more motion than midship cabins but not as much as forward cabins.  On some ships how the layout is designed your balcony may be over looked from the cabin above you, or the restaurant may be above so people can look down.   This can cut down on your privacy.
Sometimes now days the cruise lines put on special guarantee cabins.  With these you book a grade of cabin but don’t get to pick a cabin number.  These can work in your favour as I have had clients who have booked inside cabins and been upgraded to a balcony.  These guarantee cabins can cause problems as you could end up in any part of the ship.  If you don’t mind where on the ship you stay then this is a great way of booking.  If you are prone to sea sickness or only like a certain part of the ship I wouldn’t recommend you booking on one of these.  These are always different options with the cabin choices so it is always best to check the offers on which grade you are looking at.
