Face Identity Trials For Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean is working with IDEMIA to speed its disembarkation process using IMFace a 3-D face capture technology.

Trails have begun at Cape Liberty, New Jersey, and Miami, where it will go into production.

How does MFace work? The new technology compares the facial identities of passengers disembarking with the identities of passengers who boarded the ship at the start of a cruise, matching against images in the US Customs and Border Protection’s Traveler Verification Service. No images are stored after the trip is completed to ensure that passenger privacy is maintained.

Capt. Thomas Hinderhofer, Royal Caribbean’s director of Cape Liberty Cruise Port and Miami Port said ‘We have focused on improving the guests’ total experience, including the final step of clearing Customs in a fast, secure, friction-less process. ‘We received very positive guest feedback on the facial biometric technology systems as it allows passengers to swiftly pass through the CBP inspection process.’

A success and Royal Caribbean will role this new technology out to more ports in Florida.

So what are your thoughts on the new technology? Good if the whole process is swift? Or nothing wrong with the previous disembarkation? Personally, having cruised with Royal Caribbean I didn’t fell the disembarkation was an issue, however if this speeds up the process, especially on the larger ships, then great!
