Sad Times For Sri Lanka

Having visited Sri Lanka twice i consider myself very lucky to have been to one of the most beautiful countries in the world and will definitely return in the near future. Why do I like it so much? Firstly the people are so laid back, friendly & welcoming and rightly incredibly proud of their country. The food is consistently the best I’ve had in any country that I’ve been to, both in hotels and whilst out & about travelling around. There is so much to see and do including temples, wildlife safaris, whale & dolphin watching, surfing, fishing. It’s such a diverse place. The beaches are amazing. The scenery is beautiful both on the coast and inland and I defy you to see a more beautiful sunset anywhere around the globe. I have commented in the past that many religions live side by side peacefully.

The horrendous terrorist attacks this week have saddened me greatly. I am still in touch with people I have met who live there and I can see how distraught they are that these attacks have taken place both for their own people and also the tourists involved. The Foreign Office’s warning against all but essential travel means that local people will suffer massively with all the holiday cancellations due to the vicious acts of a mere few.

I  feel such an affinity to Sri Lanka and my heart obviously goes out to all the people that were killed and injured as well as their families and it spurs a feeling of defiance in me. I can’t book a holiday to somewhere the FCO deem it unsafe to go as I wouldn’t be able to get travel insurance and although I love my holidays it’s not worth the risk, but when it is safe to travel rest assured it is definitely somewhere I would gladly return to & I hope other people will feel the same.

Don’t let the terrorists win!
