Going Down Mexico Way

The time has almost come round for my annual fall & flop holiday. This is the one I look forward to at the end of the year when the clocks have gone back, the days are short & weather has turned wintry.

This year we have decided to visit the Pacific Coast of Mexico. Whilst I have previously been to the Caribbean Coast and enjoyed it immensely I have wanted to see the other side for quite some time. The weather plays a massive part for me when choosing which destination to go to, although it really is in the hands of the Gods as it seems that weather patterns are so erratic nowadays. Last year we went to Sri Lanka at what is generally one of the best times to go, having the least amount of rainfall and we had rain for almost a week. Looking at the historical weather charts for the last 3 years there has been barely any rain in this region the months of November & December, so if we do get bad weather I guess I’ll have to accept that we just have bad luck.

Having done some research it seems that the Puerto Vallarta side of Mexico has more places that actually feel like Mexico, rather than the Cancun area which quite frankly is very lively & Americanised & could be Benidorm or Ibiza with better weather. It does, however look like there are quite a lot of North American ex-pats that live in the main coastal resorts either full time or for 6 months of the year- predominantly Canadians.

We are in an all inclusive hotel and although I want plenty of R & R I can’t wait to get out & about and explore the area. It looks like there are quite a few local towns to visit & I just love hopping on a bus to immerse myself in the day-to-day goings on with the locals. There are lots of nature-related trips to do including whale watching, baby turtles being released and scenic national parks. Obviously being in the Bay of Banderas there are lots of boat trips and fishing opportunities too.

As ever (apart from the weather) what I’m most looking forward to is the food. I’m sure the food in the hotel will be pretty standard fare, but I’ve already scoured Trip Advisor and found some amazing local restaurants to sample whilst we are there. The road-side taco stands sound fantastic, authentic and cheaper than chips! It also goes without saying that there will be a fair few margaritas and tequila slammers floating around.

Can’t wait to fill you in on my trip when I return, but for now…..adios amigos!
