Finally a woman in the Driving seat!

For the first time ever in Cunards 170 year history they have appointed a woman captain!!

43 year old Captain Inger Klein Olsen started working for Cunard in 1997 as first officer of the Caronia and has worked her way up through the ranks within the Carnival group. She returned to Cunard this year as Deputy Captain of Queen Victoria.

On the first of this month she under took first duty as Captain and sailed the ship without passengers to dry dock in Hamburg where she is undergoing a refit.

Then on the 15th of December she will be taking full control of bridge with a full ship of passengers for a five night northern Europe sailing.

I think this is fantastic news and a major historical event in Cunards history however when the news broke on the cruise.co.uk facebook page not everyone agreed.

Personally I wish captain Olsen all the very best What do you think?

  1. Very best wishes to Captain Olsen.
I hear that she has had some very nice new cushions installed on the bridge.

  2. oh, by he way, I do hope the Captain’s refit goes well – is she having a male’s brain installed?

  3. I shall be avoiding the Northern Europe shipping routes around the 15th of December when Inger takes control of the bridge with a full ship of passengers…

    only joking by the way…

  4. I really admire anyone, man or woman, who by their own efforts has reached the pinnacle of success in their career. The captain has manged to reach the top in a male dominated area and must be outstanding in the many ways and facets of her role.

Any sexist comments are out-dated (new cushions, parking etc) and offensive (however jokey the tone) to the new captain and I for one wish her well.

My wife and I look forward to our cruise in September with her at the helm.

  5. About time too!! Captain Olsen has been promoted on merit, not her sex and she must be a high flyer to get a Captain position at 43. Something to be very proud of indeed. Congratulations to Captain Olsen and Cunard and hope that this is the first of many more women in the role.

  6. I was onboard the QV 15th Dec Northern Europe sailing and had a fantastic time! Captain Olsen was welcomings and i experienced the transit throught the Noord Sea Canal!
Congratulations to Captain Olsen and as above let her set the standard for future female captains!

  7. Women will only be equal when it becomes irrelevant what gender the captain is, as long as they do the job well.
