Newcastle says ‘why aye man’ to more ships!

Have you enjoyed a cruise out from Newcastle? Let me know I would love to hear your memories of the port and sail away parties! As well as the top places you visited on your cruise. I have had more than one or two during my time on Thomson Spirit back in Summer 2013. Visiting the Fjords, Iceland, Baltics, and some of the greatest cities in Europe.

More cruise ships will dock at the port of Tyne near Newcastle than ever before in 2017. The Port’s all-time high of 44 cruise ship visits in 2016 was celebrated last year. But already 50 calls at the North Shields Ferry terminal have been booked for the forthcoming 2017 sailing season.

The increase in cruise business – will mean extra money not just for the port but the surrounding area too – which will create over 1000 extra tourism jobs for the North-East economy. My experience in the shopping centre near the port is seeing crew and passengers from across the world heading back to the ship with various items like new bed linen, food, clothes horses, dehumidifiers, TV’s, new phones, watches, video consoles / games, Make up, jewelry, clothes and shoes for them and their families. It’s incredible to think where these items, bought in the UK, will end up in the world.

The Port of Tyne expects to handle 19 transit cruises bringing tourists in to the North East and more than 30 turnarounds. These ships will be sailing away to destinations that include Andalusia, Barcelona, the German waterways, Norwegian fjords, Britain, Ireland, cities in the Baltic’s such as Stockholm, Helsinki, Tallinn, Copenhagen, Oslo and St. Petersburg.

Cruise operators returning to the Tyne include Fred Olsen, Thomson, Aida and Disney, with other cruise companies like Norwegian Cruise Lines joining the list to get some cruise action from the North East of England and people who are prepared to drive down from Scotland.
