Freeze and fascinate

Freezing but fascinating cruise in the North.it was like a quote from Game of Thrones “winters coming “.

Imagine pulled at speed through a snowy forest by 9 beautiful huskies in temperatures around -14 degrees C ? On a “land of the midnight sun “.cruise that is what we experienced and much, much more in February a couple of years ago. We flew from a very cold Aberdeen to a blustery Amsterdam, and transferred to our CMV ship, the Magellan for a 13 day experience filled with adventures, it certainly was not our normal cruise by any means. The firststop was Alesund,a picture postcard Norwegian town that was devastated by fire in 1904 and then completely rebuilt in a spectacular Art Nouveau style. It even has heated benches for people to enjoy the fabulous harbour views, for a little while anyway

.An extra level of excitement for us came when we were shown the globe monument on Vinkingen, it marked the beginning of the Arctic Circle. The call of the north continued as we overnighted in Alta and visited the Sorrisniva Ice Hotel, only open Jan to March and then it melts away,i wonder what they do with all the Vodka ! Meeting the Reindeer Sami people along with the husky driving, the snowmobile experiences and the Diva appearing were highlights. What Diva ?,Alta is known of the town of the Northern lights, and we cruised almost silently on the Alta Fjord for one and a half hours when Diva put in an appearance, for that is what they call the spectacular light show in the sky that makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.As we stood on deck with a hot chocolate in almost complete silence our eyes fixed on natures light show and then they just as quickly faded away ,but we felt privileged and euphoric. Cruising gently to our next stop we were then taken to North Cape.through gigantic snowdrifts , we were now literally at the top of the world. Heading back south we stopped at the Blue city of Sortland for more spectacular views of the fjords , then back to finish our cruise at Bergen. CMV pride themselves on a smaller ship experience with fascinating guest speakers, big show entertainment and value for money prices, but this time we could not put any value on the memories that still linger.
