No more smoking on Cunard or P&O balconies

Times have been getting harder and harder for smokers in recent years.

A lot of cruise lines have already banned smoking on private cabin balconies but up until now P&O and Cunard cruise lines have allowed this.

It has now been announced that P&O and Cunard are following suit and banning smoking on private balconies.

The bans will come into effect from dates in Spring 2014 as I will list below, for people that have already booked there isn’t a lot they can do about this.

I have only quit smoking myself personally for over 3 months so I have mixed opinions on the subject.  While we all agree that smoking is very bad for health I think that people that choose to smoke should be allowed to do so as long as it isn’t adversely effecting the non smokers.  I agree with the ban on enclosed public areas but surely private balconies is a bit much.  I understand that the smoke can blow across, its a shame that we can’t just rely on communication and manners to resolve these issues anymore.

I think they should have a certain amount of balconies that are allocated as smoking as not to disturb the non smokers.  This could be another tactic for Cunard and P&O’s Getaway and Vantage deals.   They could say if you want to pick a smoking cabin you have to book on the Vantage fare, although that would also mean non smokers booking on a getaway fare would then risk being in a smoking balcony, hmm I don’t know how well that would go down.

I wonder how long it will be before smoking is made illegal ?

  1. wonderful news. at last one can sit out on the balcony without fear of smoke drifting across. Smoking should be on the very top deck so people dont walk through it when walking round the other deck.

  2. Many of my friends smoke and we often cruise together. I have no issue with smokers, its their right to smoke and I feel that the ban on smoking on balconies is totally madness. We often forget about the massive obese people eating all day in every restaurant and having to look at that turns my stomach. What about the people who drink all day and night consequently smelling of booze. Shall we ban drinking as well? Of course not! All I hope is that the cruise companies loose revenue on a grand scale. Have you noticed that most of the crew smoke! including the captains and senior officers.

  3. I agree with everything you said Richard, being a smoker I was prepared to pay for balcony for that 1 reason, the cigarette I enjoyed most on the balcony was about 5a.m. with a cup of tea watching the ship approaching port or the sunrise, when nobody else is about. Perhaps the top balconies could be for smokers if required as smoke rises not interferring with others. The policy is going to be very hard for the physically impaired who rely on help for no way can they keep going up or down decks to the designated areas therefore curtailling their enjoyment. In these days of financial constraint is it sensible for cruise companies to restrict the number of people prepared to pay there higher prices for whatever reason when cheaper will now do. Perhaps another was is to restrict it in family friendly ships only after all we are all adults and life is compromise.

  4. I have been loyal to P&O for many years, but I am a smoker and have always paid extra for a balcony, but we will not be sailing with them again if smoking is now banned. Why cant they have balconies on one side of the ship for smokers and non smokers on the other side of the ship.

  5. I agree smoking in a public place on board is unplesant for all comcerned as they are generally poorly ventilated. However banning smoking on a private balcony is a step too far! what next— limiting the amount of alcohol consumed so we don’t have drunken passengers? That will never happen because it is revenue for the company, whereas smokers generally purchase their “illegal drug” ashore!!Very unfair.

  6. I don’t agree with the smoking ban on balconies they should have some for smokers. My husband is very considered smoker and even put the buts in his pocket they been pushed into corner of the ship paying the same money. We have sailed with Cunard many times and we also look forward to the Cruises but as my husband is a smoke I’m afraid they lost our business and we spend a lot of money when we are away so every one is a looser. I think the smoking ban is gone to far and also I think they know sooner or later they will catch people smoking and they put the extra charge on the stateroom another way to make money. I feel they keep penalizing the smokers. People who smoke they are also bigger spender so I think the liners gone to far.

  7. Welcome to the real world! It’s about time, Cunard and P&O.
