This week has seen the weather start to cool down in many places and thoughts turn to where we can seek the sunshine elsewhere.
One of the most popular Autumn destinations are the ever-popular Canary Islands. There are several cruise itineraries usually including a selection of these lovely isles, together with the stunning island of Madeira and Portugal.
Someone said to me this week that they couldn’t think of anything more boring than a cruise to the Canaries so let me highlight a few things other than good climates.
I will start this week with Santa Cruz de Tenerife, one of the 2 capital cities of the Canary Islands.
Tenerife is home to the world’s 3rd tallest volcano and a very popular excursion is to Mount Teide set in the stark wilderness of Las Canadas Del Teide national park. Whilst the lava fields provide their own dramatic landscape, the soil of the island is very fertile and you drive through the beautiful lush Esperanza Forest on your way up the mountain. However active, you are, you will be able to enjoy this stunning landscape either on foot or from the comfort of your tour bus.
Another option is to spend your day in port at Loro Parque, which is considered to be one of the most important parrot parks in the world and where you can sit and watch amazing dolphin shows, or explore the biggest underwater tunnel watching the marine life swimming above your head.
If flora is more your thing, visit one of the tropical botanical gardens.
Step back in time with a trip to the mysterious Pyramids of Guimar and the Secret Garden.
If this all sounds too energetic, you can discover one of the many sandy beaches nearby such as in Puerto de La Cruz.
Within walking distance of the port are the remains of Castillo de San Cristobal housing the famous Canon Tigre or Tiger Canon which shot a musketball at Horatio Nelson’s right arm in 1797, causing so much damage, it had to be amputated
Alternatively, just shop. Perfume and cosmetics are much cheaper than at home. Bags and belts are good value and linen is especially good. All my tablecloths are from the Canaries including stunning Christmas table runners. A lovely souvenir and good talking point when admired!
Then sit down to a sumptuous meal back on board and look forward to your next port.
