Funchal in Madeira is one of the most beautiful ports on the Atlantic cruise itineraries.
A natural harbour, Funchal is surrounded by mountains and enjoys a temperate year-round climate.
The warm weather and volcanic soil are responsible for it’s stunning gardens including orchid gardens with so many varieties and colours, it is hard to choose a favourite.
When we visited last year on Fred Olsen’s Balmoral, I bought a couple of orchid bulbs which finally have started to shoot. I gave up on them doing anything a while ago and have completely forgotten which ones I chose so that’ll be a nice surprise when they flower.
Funchal is easy to explore on foot. In the centre of town is the Se Cathedral and many shops and museums. Also a rather nice local wine cellar where you can sample the delicious Madeira wines.
You will also be able to visit the farmers market where you can get anything from fish to embroidery!
If you are feeling in need of refinement, why not have high tea in the famous Reids Hotel. Perched on the hillside overlooking the sea, this impressive venue is full of old-world charm where Winston Churchill enjoyed relaxing on holiday and painting the wonderful view.
If you want something more energetic, take the cable car up to the Jardin Botanico and come back down in one of the unique basket toboggans.
If you don’t want to walk, the local transport will take you right back to your ship.
By the way, Madeira cake is nothing like the one we know!!
If you fancy any of this, call me on 0800 408 6192 or if you have your own memories of Madeira please add them, I’d love to read them.
