Viking Cruises Adds Another String To Their Bow

River cruising has become incredibly popular over the last twelve months, with more and more ocean cruisers dipping their toes into river cruising to try something a little different.

I have previously blogged in the passed about ocean cruise itineraries becoming quite samey and a little boring, so river cruising really interests me.

Many cruisers are ship before destination these days, with the emergence of ‘Mega-Liners’ such as Norwegian Epic, and ‘Smart Ships’ such as Anthem of the Seas. But personally I am the other way round………

Destination is definitely the first thought in my mind when looking at holidays.

With cruising however you do have to consider both……

There is not much point going to a place if you know it’s not where you want to go, likewise not much point going on a ship that won’t fit the bill either.

So with Viking Cruises, it seems they are trying to tick both boxes and give their customers everything.

Of course Viking are very much known for their River Cruising and have been for many years, indeed there are not may places you cannot reach with them, making for a truly immersive experience.

But yesterday Viking named their latest incarnation, the Viking Star, over in Bergen.

A 47,000 tonne ocean going ship, named by the Mayor of Bergen, Trude Devland on Norwegian Constitution Day coincidentally!

She will initially sail the Med & Baltic areas before being joined by two other ships by 2017 to cover more of the worlds oceans.

Viking Cruises are very excited about their latest venture, and their Chairman & Founder, Torstein Hagen had this to say,

We believe the arrival of Viking Star signals a new era in destination-focused cruising, and I could not be more proud that she will call my favourite city in the world ‘home.’”

He added: “this is a ship that was built for exploration and designed with our Scandinavian heritage in mind, and our guests will experience it from the moment they step on board.”

So do I think Viking will succeed?

Of course.

We are talking about a hugely successful River Cruise Line taking on arguably something a little easier, and with small / mid sized ships able to get in any port, the world is quite literally, their oyster.
