LGBT Cruising

So having returned to work after having a great Christmas and New Year and getting back into the swing of things I thought I would blog about the views from the LGBT community of cruising. Having been on 2 Gay cruises myself with RSVP vacations I thought that the general view on this style of cruising would be the same, however I could not have been further from the truth.

I travelled out to Los Angeles back in 2009 to join the Norwegian Star for a cruise booked with an American company called RSVP Vacations. Needless to say I didn’t really know what to expect having never been on this style of cruise before. This ship itself, the staff and the food was to a high standard and I thoroughly enjoyed the ship. However there seems to be a lot of entertainment on-board from parties to stage entertainment. In all honesty there was something going on all the time.

After speaking to a lot of the LGBT community over my time in London over the New Year it would appear that there seems to be more and more of an interest in the way hetrosexual’s  enjoy their cruise – less partying and more of a relaxed feel.

For those that I spoke to that had experienced a RSVP or Atlantis cruise told me that it seemed over powering with the amount of partying that would go on throughout a 7 night cruise. One person I spoke to said “They would have to many parties such as fancy dress or tea parties, drawing you in to want to drink more and dance more whilst on-board, which is not what cruising is all about”. I certainly agree a cruise should have more of a relaxed sense of enjoyment and we all know just how expensive some of the drinks on-board can be.

One lady I had spoken to advised me that she was on the Allure of the sea’s last year booked with Atlantis and she said that because the ship can hold so many passengers some of the parties could be dangerous due to the amount of people attending the party. “Surely this can be a health and safety issue”. But she did assure me she enjoyed her time on-board.

The LGBT market seems to be feeling more accepted now to join the typical cruise rather than paying out thousands more to travel with RSVP and Atlantis. Although I have travelled twice with RSVP Vacations I strongly agree that you pay well above the odds for this style of cruising. And it seems to becoming apparent that it is now accepted for the LGBT market to cruise on what we would call “normal” cruising!
