The Five Best Things To Do On A Transatlantic Cruise

Yesterday saw the 175th Anniversary cruises of Cunard going on sale and the one that appears to be the most popular is the transatlantic crossing sailing from Liverpool on 4th July on Queen Mary.

This crosses over the Atlantic visiting Halifax and Boston before arriving in New York.

The comment quite frequently made about voyages with lots of days at sea is ” but there`s nothing to do”. I was lucky enough to  do a transatlantic on Queen Mary a couple of years ago and I loved it! It is one of the best cruises I have ever done and we met loads of lovely people all having a great time.

So what is there to do ? You can`t get off, there are no excursions, but this ship has so much going on I could have stayed on her much longer, apart from the damage  that would be done to my waistline of course.

Here are my favourite things.

Number one has to be – Visit the Canyon Ranch  Spa. It great! We paid for a 4 day package allowing unlimited access to the indoor pool, relaxation area and saunas. Because you have to pay a small fee to use these fabulous facilities it is never overcrowded. We would go down morning and evening to relax and enjoy a swim in the pool, it has tropical rain showers and a wave machine, saunas and whirlpools. After this we would take a shower and use all the complimentary Canyon Ranch pampering products that are freely available.

Next on the list – The planetarium. Queen Mary has the only one at sea. Take a virtual ride into outer space, view the stars and other visual spectacles or take a course on celestial navigation in Illuminations. There are new shows on offer everyday.

Third place – Learn how to make a Red Snapper ! No not a fish a cocktail! There are lots of activities and courses available on board, but cocktail making was a lot of fun and you get to drink the results. This took place in the Commodore Club on deck nine where you can sit and watch the ocean pass by at the front of the ship. The drink is basically a blood mary with gin instead of vodka and if you fancy having a go here is the recipe:-

Ingredients

3 ounces Gin
6 ounces tomato juice
1 ounce freshly squeezed lemon juice
6 dashes Tabasco
3 dashes worcestershire sauce
2 pinches celery salt
2 pinches freshly ground black pepper
Directions:
  1. Rim a glass with the black pepper and celery salt
  2. Shake all other ingredients over ice and strain into ice-filled glass.

How easy is that – delicious !

Number four – treat yourself to fish and chips in the Golden Lion pub. You may be on your way to New York but fish and chips taste good anywhere.

Last, but not least – Relax and watch the ocean as you sail away. Turn of the mobile phone, the I pad and anything else you can`t live without, and enjoy the journey. I find looking out at the sea one of the most soothing things in the world. there’s nothing to see except the ocean until you reach New York, but that adds to the calming affect this journey has.

I could go on and on, but five is enough for now. I`d love to know what you`re favourite things were on your voyage across the ocean.
