Why no lifeguards for little cruisers ??

I was shocked and saddened to hear of a six year old little boy drowning on the Carnival Victory. Apparently the little boy was swimming with his 10 year old brother when he got into difficulty.  He was spotted buy a DJ who immediately stopped the music and dived in to save him.  Other passengers scrambled to help but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
In a statement the cruise line said “Carnival extends its heartfelt sympathy to the family during this very difficult time”. Carnival also advised that it does not have lifeguards on duty at its pools and parental supervision is required for all children under 13.  I am sorry but as a mother of two little boys that spend the majority of their holiday in the pool this just simply is not good enough.  These cruise lines spend hundreds of thousands on the build of these ships to include the next big thing like bumper cars, zip lines, carousels, and floating bars to try and stand out from the crowd so why can’t they spend some money on employing a lifeguard or two around the pool.
My boys are like two little fish and in the summer holidays we spent a lot of time down at our local Lido.  This is a huge pool and as you can imagine at peak summer holiday time can be extremely crowded.  Very clearly in a big bold sign on the wall around the pool it clearly states that no child under the age of 8 can go into the pool without adult supervision along with about four lifeguards on duty also.  As a parent you obviously have a responsibility to keep a keen eye on your children especially in water as tragically it can all go drastically wrong in a matter of seconds but it’s nice to know that when we were at the Lido not only was I on my guard but I also had the support of lifeguards who are professionally trained in first aid on hand also.

So why does the same not apply to cruise ships??  We are not asking for babysitters or someone to take the rains and look after our children around the pool but to have that security of a lifeguard on hand if something did go wrong is invaluable. If you’ve cruised before in the school holidays you will know that the pool area can get extremely busy and full of lots of people so if you cannot get a chair close to the pool it’s very difficult to see the children at all times unless you spend the whole time in the pool with them.
If cruise lines want to be innovative and the leaders in the market, here’s a crazy idea …………employ some lifeguards !!!!
