Do you play Table Roulette?

Do you always book a table for two when you cruise as a couple or do you prefer to dine with fellow travellers and make new acquaintances, possibly even new friends?

When booking a cruise with fixed dining times, you can specify if you would like a table for two or more, sometimes up to ten people. Obviously, if you are travelling with friends or family, you can request a larger table for your group or you can make a group with people you have yet to meet.

Over many years of cruising, I have been fortunate to make a few new and long-lasting friendships by sharing. It is nice to have others to discuss your day with and maybe plan activities with in future ports or just to socialise with in the bars or shows around the ship. It is actually perfect for anyone travelling alone to get to meet others to chat with or share a drink with.

On the flip-side to this, and thankfully not a common occurrence, I have also met a few along the way that I would be happy never to encounter again. Obviously, if you are unhappy with your companions, you can of course discreetly ask to be moved. No one will force you to stay where you are not happy. There is always the couple who have been on more ships, stayed in better cabins, have perfect offspring, had better careers etc and love to tell you all about it at every given opportunity. There are also the moaners. These are the ones who hate the ship, the weather, the ports of call, the food, the crew etc and love to bring everyone else down with their negativity.

Personally, I usually go for a table for two as I like my dinner and usually have a few courses and don’t want others waiting for me to finish. I also like time with my husband which can be a rarity in our busy lives.

Do you like to be alone or do you play table roulette?
