Just splendid... even for a fussy veggie!

Firstly a huge thank you to cruise.co.uk for this amazing opportunity and for the warm welcome on board MSC Splendida. First impressions? I’m impressed. As a P&O regular who has dabbled with NCL (and had a cruising disaster on board the Thomson Dream aka Thomson Disaster), I came on this trip with no MSC preconceptions. But the ease of boarding, straightforward card activation, and outstanding welcome buffet left me impressed at the outset. Very impressed indeed. As a fussy vegetarian with allergies and a dislike of vegetables, my expectations of finding something enjoyable to eat hadn’t been high. But armed with a huge Alan Partridge style buffet plate, I was absolutely spoilt for choice. Not used to having multiple options to choose from, I soon found my plate laden with pizza, feta and pasta, fresh salad, falafel, chips – truly a case of my eyes being bigger than my belly! My gluttonous ‘foodie’ cruising companion, Craig was surprisingly reserved opting for German sausage and ravioli – followed by two deserts. Slightly nervous that I wouldn’t be able to manage dinner in the Yacht Club restaurant later in the day, we headed off to explore the ship and to walk off some calories. What an amazing buzz there is – everyone is beaming with smiles, crew and passengers alike. Clearly there is some confusion over the toilet signs as I along with at least four other ladies found ourselves in the gents on more than one occasion, amidst much giggling. Splendida has an elegance and beauty without being ostentatious and it feels much friendlier than some of the larger ships I’ve cruised on. And I needn’t have been nervous about the Yacht Club dinner – the staff bent over backwards to accommodate my dietary requirements and fussiness. Tasked by cruise.co.uk with reviewing the nightlife, I then headed off to the numerous bars and casino. Whatever your taste, there is something for everyone. I stuck to the lager, but the menu of cocktails was extensive if that’s your thing. Even without the thoroughly enjoyable task of reviewing the nightlife, the chances of me making it out of bed for an 08:30 ship’s tour the next morning were always remote. Having been woken up by my cruise companion at 03:30 when he stumbled into the cabin raving about his new best friend Antonio (who it later transpired is the MD for MSC Cruises UK & Ireland) and then again at 06:15 when he finally retired to bed, the lure of my comfy bed proved too much and I’ll look forward to hearing all about the ship’s tour from my fellow passengers later. It’s safe to say that my cruising companion extensively reviewed ALL the nightlife on board MSC Splendida on his first night aboard – I however am pacing myself and will write more about the bars tomorrow. And as I sit enjoying the breakfast buffet in the sunshine, I think he’s still blissfully asleep in the cabin recharging his batteries for tonight. God help us all.

Nope, he's been up a while, staggering around the maze of hallways and feeding himself at the amazing buffet.

Enjoy your afternoon nap Moomin, after losing your Yahtzee virginity on the cruise. I've just made €20.11 in the casino. Happy days!!
