“Something Beautiful, Remarkable, or Unfamiliar” best describes the new MSC Meraviglia

Meraviglia (pronounced “mehr-ah-vee-ya” — (the name means “wonder” in Italian), will feature cutting-edge wristband technology (similar to the RFID wristbands pioneered on Royal Caribbean’s Quantum Class ships), to make payments, book spa treatments and speciality restaurants, and allow parents to geo-locate their children.

Controlling their TV could be as easy as pressing a button on their phone.  Guests are also able to book excursions, shows and restaurants via 300 interactive screens, located in different public areas.  Through iBeacon technology, guests can receive offers and information straight to their mobile devices.  When shopping, guests can also use the augmented reality mirrors on board to see how they would look in different clothes in 3D, without having to actually try anything on.  A tech first is the 315ft ‘Mediterranean-style promenade’, which features a 262ft LED light dome – the world’s biggest at sea.The screen will be used to create light shows 24-hours a day while the promenade itself will feature pre-dinner parades each day.

Features planned for the ship include interlinked “cluster cabins” for family groups, which allow up to three cabins to be opened up to accommodate up to 10 passengers, along with the line’s first solo cabins, which will include a shared lounge space.

There will be 12 restaurants.  The buffet is open 20 hours a day, and will serve Mediterranean specialties and international cuisines — including world food, “itinerary” and wellness corners.

The big-ticket news is Cirque de Soleil at sea, who will perform two exclusive shows six nights a week in a dedicated lounge — The Carousel Lounge — a circular performance space with a 180-degree circular glass wall, which will feature cutting-edge technology and special rigging, and capacity for up to 413 passengers.

The main pool on deck 15 will have a vibe similar to Miami’s South Beach.  At approximately 25 meters long, it will have the most generous poolside space at sea.  By night, the pool becomes a visual spectacle, illuminated with special lighting.  There will be a 10 meter indoor pool with a magrodome that can be opened when the ship is in port or when the sun is shining.  The Aft Pool on deck 16 offers views from the back of the ship, and at night it is transformed into a dance space.  The ship will also have a large outdoor water park.

MSC Meraviglia, at 1,033ft long and 213ft tall, will become one of the biggest cruise ships at sea, with room for 5,700 guests on its 19 decks when she launches in June 2017.
