Journey to the Tsars

“What should I pack?”  is one of the most frequently asked questions among first-time cruisers who aren’t sure what to expect on board.  Experienced cruisers know that while there is no standard answer to this question, there are some general guidelines.  What you should pack depends on the formality of the cruise line and ship you choose, as well as where you are going.  Next week we cruise from Amsterdam to the Baltics.     https://goo.gl/44fvWX

There are 3 girls in my family and it is always the same old panic of “What to pack”.  Most would categorize us as experienced cruisers but let me tell you it never gets any easier in our family.

If you selected a more casual cruise line, which we have – Royal Caribbean, the dress code is probably more relaxed.  Shorts and t-shirts, even swimwear with a cover-up, are likely to be acceptable anywhere on board before six in the evening (each cruise line varies).  After that, jeans or chino’s with polo-style shirts for men, and casual dresses or trouser suits for women.  Children can usually wear jeans and any clean shirt for dinner.  Very seldom do I get to see my daughters in a dress.  Still, you’ll find that many people love dressing up for the evening – you would fit in well in a smart dress or tailored trousers and collared shirt and jacket at formal night on a Royal Caribbean ship but not on P&O where a tuxedo is the norm.

In addition, consider where you’ll be sailing to and what you plan to do on shore.  Will you need sturdy walking shoes?  (yes ) Are you visiting a place where it may be considered offensive to show too much skin? (no)  Will you need a sweater or jacket for cool nights?  Again, you never know as I have heard it can get extremely hot in Northern Europe. Always take swim wear and gym gear (just in case you fancy working out!)

One more general rule is to pack less than you think you will need especially if you are flying like we are.  No one will notice if you repeat an outfit.  And, you’ll want to leave room in your luggage for souvenirs that you may pick up along the way.
