Edging Closer! – Celebrity Edge Gets It’s First Taste Of Water

One of the most anticipated new ships for 2018 the Celebrity Edge has just floated out of her dry dock at the STX France shipyard. It has been six whole years since the launch of Celebrity’s last ship the Reflection (Solstice Class) and Celebrity Cruises’ first new design and class in more than 10 years.  Celebrity Edge will have a tonnage of 129,500 GT and will occupy up to  2,918 passengers, with innovative features including The Magic Carpet, the Rooftop Garden, The Retreat, and two brand new suite categories

This truly is an exciting moment for our brand,” said Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, President and CEO, Celebrity Cruises. “The float out process marks a milestone in the building of Celebrity Edge. With exterior construction complete, the amazing STX France team will now turn their attention to bringing all of the meticulously designed venues and transformational staterooms and suites to life.”

Celebrity Edge will be based in Fort Lauderdale in Florida with it’s first sailing will be later this year on the 21st November with a 3 night mini-cruise to the Bahamas. It will then offer 7 night cruises to the Eastern and Western Caribbean throughout the season to the end of April  2019, where it will then re-position over the Atlantic for a season in the Mediterranean offering between 7 and 11 night itineraries out of Barcelona and Rome. There is also great news for the UK market as there will be a 10 night sailing on the 15th May 2019 from Southampton to Rome, taking in the ports of Bilbao, La Coruna, Lisbon, Gilbraltar and Palma.

However it does not finish there, as there are another 3 Edge Class sister ships planned for 2020 the Celebrity Beyond and then 2021 and 2020 which are to be named yet. With an estimated cost of 1 billion US dollars (EUR 830 million) per ship, it just shows you how huge cruising is and what these cruise companies will invest to stay and compete with their rivals.
