Cruise Norway The Hybrid Way

The pioneers and master of Norway cruises has to be Hurtigruten. If you haven’t heard of them before heres a quick outline, Hurtigruten are a passenger and freight company sailing the coast of Norway, as well as cruise passengers locals can also hop and and off along the coast. They have 11 ships and 4 exploration ships taking you to the unseen of Antarctica, Greenland and south america.

I have personally sailed with them onboard the Finnmarken back in 2011 from Tromso and had an absolutley amazing voyage and got to witness something on nearly everybody’s bucket list, the northern lights! truly beautiful!

Hurtigruten have something very exciting on the horizon, 2 new hybrid expedition ships and they have recently been names as ‘Roald Amundsen’ and ‘Fridtjof Nansen’. You may recognize these names as 2 of the most influential Norwegian pioneers.

These 2 new ships have been designed by the impressive Rolls Royce and will be delivered during 2019. Each ship is to be built identical in size and will carry 530 passengers in 265 cabins, and will be 140 meters in length.

To explain the Hybrid technology in a  little more details;

  • Makes fully electric propulsion an option for shorter periods of time
  • New battery technology contributes to a significant reduction of CO2 from ships
  • New solutions will contribute to a 20 percent reduction of fuel consumption. In total, the two new ships will have a reduced CO2 emission of 6400 metric tons per year compared to traditional ships. In perspective, this is the same amount of yearly emissions created by 5540 new cars.

If you are looking for more of an adventure on your next cruise, to beautiful locations on more of an authentic trip mixing with the locals Hurtigruten could definitely be the options for you, and why not try out one of there new ships, they really do look set to be amazing!
