First Major Hurricane of the 2018 Season Named!

As you will all know by now, I’m a weather freak. I LOVE it, I love tracking, analysing, recording and discussing severe weather around the globe.

1st June 2018 saw the start of the Atlantic Hurricane Season, it officially ends on November 20th 2018. The peak is usually the first week in September and once again we are seeing an explosion in Tropical Cyclonic weather these past few days.

Hurricane Florence has intensified rapidly over the last 24 hours and has an increasing chance of hitting the US East Coast next week thanks to a large block of High Pressure which will stop the Hurricane spinning out to sea.

We also have a ‘Wave Train’ that is moving off the African Continent, four weather areas of interest after eachother with the first set to become Tropical Storm and then possible Hurricane Helene.

Forecasting is an exceptionally complex exercise that is rapidly changing and mostly inaccurate, however as weather systems move closer to land we will get a good idea of any potential landfall that could cause damage, death and destruction.

Living in the UK we are lucky enough to only experience a few major storms each year, most of these are strong but nothing like the power of a Hurricane. Where’s Michael Fish?

After last years two Category 5 Hurricane’s, Irma and Maria the general consensus was that 2018 would be a relatively below average season, we will see how that pans out! The 2017 Hurricane names Irma, Maria and Harvey have all been retired due to the level of destruction and death they brought to the Caribbean and US.

Cruises are operating as scheduled at the moment with the likelihood that cruises visiting Bermuda will have altered itineraries.

Happy Cruising!
