The Beautiful Rhodes Town in Greece

My husband and I have recently returned from a 9 night luxury holiday from Rhodes in Greece.

We mostly go on cruises so it made a really nice change to be able to fully immerse ourselves in Greek food and plenty of days and nights out exploring the town..
We took a couple of boat trips to Lindos and Symi Island.
We was so impressed with Island life. We got talking to the locals who we are so friendly they advised us Rhodes is like no other island and people are not highly stressed. They get plenty of rest time and its super busy in summer months so they are very grateful for the tourism and have many workers from outside of Rhodes who come during the busy months for taxis and restaurant, hotel work.
The old town is steeped in archaeological heritage from before the Romans were in town and the Venetian influences are all over this medieval city. The old town is walled meaning there is a point where you enter in and out but generally the “old town” as its referred to locally is surrounded by the new and old Mandrakki harbour. There are numerous shops, bars, taverna’s and restaurants serving all manor of cuisine from all over the med. Typically Greek taverna’s are still the norm.
You can easily loose yourself down the side streets of Rhodes where small quint medieval alleyways are only explored because you can hear laughter and the unforgettable sound of Greek music and a traditional bouzoukia.
We stumbled across an old man who explained to us he spoke 6 languages and wanted us to experience a traditional Greek night in his romantic light alfresco curbside restaurant. We experienced some of the finest local meets and a fab Greek singer and band and were given a great level of service.
The euro has made Rhodes a little more expensive and we spent a lot of our spending money getting to and from the town in taxi’s. You can stay nearer town or get buses in and out or better still hire a car so you can take a trip to Lindos or Symi Island for the day.
Our experience with the new town which has bar street and lots of important buildings was also very clean and pleasant. Very different vibe to the old town but the people so polite food more reasonably priced just somehow slightly less atmospheric ambiance, it seems to me to fully see what Rhodes represents you have to loose yourself in the ancient old town.
One highlight in the modern streets of Rhodes is Memphis restaurant very similar to TGI Fridays back home, from ribs to burgers this place does american steaks and food very reasonably priced I would recommend a dinner here if you are getting a little bored of Greek dishes.
Have you been to Rhodes? What were your thoughts?
