MSC Cruises – Who Are They??

My Silver ticket won me a bottle of bubbles

Some of you will know that I and most of my colleagues work from home which is great as we have no traffic or weather issues and can be flexible with our hours meaning we can be available when our customers need us. On the other hand it can be a little isolating as you do spend a lot of time alone. So when opportunities arise to go out and network and meet people I always attend if I can.

MSC Cruises local Sales Manager, Danielle,  arranged a breakfast meeting in Costa Coffee quite near to me yesterday, so I met up with a colleague and we went together, joined by a couple of other ladies from different companies that we hadn’t met before. Over coffee and pastries we had an informal presentation from Danielle and exchanged stories and news. So what did I learn about MSC?

It is a family owned company, owned by a family from Sorrento, Italy. It is the biggest family owned shipping company in the world, having not only cruise ships but over 300 cargo ships. 12 new cruise ships on order between now and 2026 will make it one of the largest cruise lines in the world.

It is great for families and last  year won the Best Cruise line for Families Award from Cruise Critic, an award generally won by Royal Caribbean.

Contrary to popular belief, not everything is geared to Italian passengers. Although it is Italian owned and they do great pizza and pasta, the cuisine on board is International, as is the entertainment and the first language is ENGLISH. Announcements are kept to a minimum and strictly safety related. These will be in English, followed by the languages of all passengers on board.

For the first time ever MSC Cruises have a ship in Southampton this year for the whole Summer Season. The MSC Magnifica is doing various itineraries including the Norwegian Fjords, Baltic Cities, British Isles and Spain and France. She has been adapted to appeal to British tastes with Tea and Coffee making facilities in the rooms and lots of British favourites such as Yorkshire tea, HP Sauce, Nutella and more.

MSC Cruises have come a long long way in the 15 plus years they have been operating in the UK, when they started with a couple of small ageing ships up to the present when they have some of the most impressive state of the art ships afloat.

And, while learning about this yesterday we were given chocolate bars with the chance of finding a golden ticket, Willy Wonka style which would get us on the new MSC Seaside for the launch ceremony. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be, but I did find a silver ticket which bagged me a bottle of Prosecco! So all in a very nice morning.
