I Am A Baby Boomer!!

I read a really interesting article this week on cruising statistics and all that jazz.  The article said that over 65% of UK cruise passengers were over the age of 55 with those aged 65 years and older making a massive 41% of the market. I was shocked however to read that the “baby boomers” were those people born between 1946 and 1964, which puts me in that bracket!  You may laugh, but I really did not think I was “that age!”

The article went onto say that my age group perhaps did not want cruising holidays with the family anymore, or traveling in the school holidays, which I still have to do.  It said that we are looking for something else, perhaps more educational, or only want to cruise from the UK, sample British ships only, have British food with British entertainment and some formal traditions on the ship.  I have to admit (or is it because I was born in the latter part of this age group!) that I am not YET ready for educational cruises as I can have that wherever the ship docks and learn a bit of the history.  Am I ready for just sailing on a British ship? No, I want to sample lots of different cruise lines, as well of course as the UK ones.

There are an awful lot of people that only want to sail from the UK but I also think that is because it is so accessible and easy. What I do think though is that we “older generation” are looking for something a bit different.   I personally am not a fan of cruising or having a land based holiday where they are loads of children around. Been there, done that. I want something which is mainly for adults and has a bit more interest. That can be in the size of the ship, the itinerary itself, the entertainment being just a bit different, – there are many things which can make your holiday different to the usual mainstream.

I guess now your going to say what? Well, I have to go back to the smaller ships again, such as Azamara, Oceania, Viking, and the really top notch such as Seabourn, Silversea and Regent – yes more expensive but look what you get for your money.  I also go back to river cruising which I think is wonderful.

We are meant to be the cash free generation, I am still waiting for that! However, we have the choice to pick and choose, take your time to pick the right itinerary and ship for you!

Till next time x
