Thomson reveal new futuristic aircraft

A lot of people aren’t too keen on travelling with a charter airline and much prefer the likes of BA, AA, Virgin when it comes to long haul flights.  But Thomson appear to be upping their game.

They’ve already increased their legroom on many aircraft to rival the likes of Virgin but this appears to be the next step.

Thomson have announced their plans for the new aircraft will include kids clubs and child-free zones in a five year plan to make itself THE holiday airline.

Thomson take five million Brits on holiday every year and P&O quite often use Thomson for their flights to and from Barbados so this could be a big help for them too with Thomson planning to improve entertainment and introduce food based around the destination they’re taking you from and to.

Thomson have 47 brand new Boeing 737 MAX jets on order due for delivery in 2018 and rumour has it that these will be the aircraft to feature all of the new functions although family and child free zones will be brought in from next Summer along with ‘couples’ pods’ with wine coolers!

So what will the changes be?

Booths aimed at families and groups on short to mid-haul flights.  The booths will seat four to six people and will be situated towards the rear of the aircraft with a fixed table and the seats facing each other with plenty of space for the kids to spread out and play.

Kids Clubs with fully trained crew members helping to entertain children with destination themed activities.

Zoning which will include extra legroom seats where passengers can book a child free area on board or the dedicated family zone starting from next summer.

Duo Seating which will be pods for couples which give more privacy and even include a wine cooler on short to mid-haul routes. An early version of this will be launched in summer 2015.

Entertainment will be improved with new content and even a bedtime story channel for the kids, specially designed teenage shows and even the ability to view room upgrades, use advance check in and pre-book excursions through a new state-of-the-art system!

Food and Drink will be improved too and Thomson have already announced that drinks will be free in economy from this winter and that meals will be themed by destination.  Drinks will also be themed on long haul flights and a Beach Snack Bar will be available for Premium Economy passengers on long-haul flights where they can grab a bite to eat and a drink and mingle with fellow passengers.

All sound fab to me! What are your thoughts? Do you choose your airline carefully or do you just go with whoever can get you there the cheapest way so you can enjoy the rest of your holiday?

I’d love to hear your thoughts.

  1. This sounds like a great idea. It will be interesting to see what it is going to cost. Thomsons already have better leg room in economy than BA and virgin and there premium seats are equivelant. The idea of child free zones really appeals. There inothing wore thanbeing kept aake on a night fligjt by a crying baby. The kids entertainment sounds great ad well for families. I am just wondering about the logistics of it all. It sounds too good to be true.
