Britannia! – Commencing countdown, engines on!

Britannia is revving up her engines!

Yesterday marked a very exciting day in the continuing construction process of P&O Cruises brand new Ship Britannia.  At Fincantieri’s Monfalcone shipyard near Trieste in Italy the engines were started up for the very first time by Formula One racing presenter Suzi Perry, along with Captain of the Britannia, Paul Brown and chief engineer, Sinclair Ross.

When at full throttle, Britannia’s four engines will generate  84,000 horsepower which is equivalent to the power generated by 168 supercars, allowing the 141,000 tonne ship to cruise at a speed of 22 knots.

Very impressive, however can you imagine the size of the fuel bill? Just to give you an insight into the amount of fuel these behemoth’s can get through take a look at these figures.

I suppose we all wish our cars would do more miles to the gallon but in cruise ship terms you are talking feet to the gallon!

Celebrity Eclipse which weighs in at 122,000 tonnes – 56 feet to the gallon!

Queen Mary 2 which weighs in at 151,000 tonnes – 41 feet to the gallon!

You’ll never look at filling up your car in the same way again!

Bye for now.
