New To Rivers

If you have ever fancied a river cruise but have not been too sure here are some thoughts to consider first to tempt you.

PLUS POINTS.

  • You need pack and unpack only once
  • River Cruise ships to enable you to enjoy the ever changing scenery (riverscape), all at eye level.
  • You’ll wake up in a different place every day, often in the very heart of the city or town.
  • You’ll never have to take a tender ashore- you simply step off the ship when it ties up.
  • The atmosphere on board is always friendly and informal never stuffy.
  • The ride is  silky smooth – there’s no rolling like on board many of the Ocean cruise ships so you don’t suffer from sea sickness.
  • all cabins have outside views.
  • The dress code is completely casual.
  • You can leave the ship in the evening to go out to dinner & see a show or the theatre.

MINUS POINTS.

  • If you are tall, the beds on board are normally less than 6ft 1 inch.
  • Don’t wear white. River Cruise ships are long and low which means the funnels are also low, soot from the emissions from Diesel engines and generators can be a problem particularly on the upper open deck.
  • The flow of water in almost all of the Rivers can not be controlled , so there will be times when the water level is so low that even a specially constructed River Cruise ship with its shallow draft cannot travel.

WHAT GENDER IS A RIVER?

Whether a River is known as a he or a she depends on its behaviour. The River Rhone is always referred to masculine because the waters are

turbulent and rough at times.

The Saone on the other hand is a gentler kind of river – more beautiful and tranquil so is referred to as “she” so is the Blue Danube.

(although Napoleon said the Danube is KING OF THE RIVERS.)

The Rhine is male as referred to as the “Father Rhine ”

The Nile is also deemed as masculine river.

The Volga is always referred to as the “Dear Little Mother” even though the mightiest River in Europe.

As always if there are any questions you have on River Cruising please let me know I would love to hear from you.
