Which Drink Gives The Worst Hangover? The Best Thing You’ll Ever Read!

This blog is inspired by a wonderful lie I once told a colleague, whom I introduced to the magical world of Gin & Tonic.

alcoholic drink with lemon and ice on a old wooden table

He knows who he is, and he probably still hates me to this day for the amazing hangover he experienced after falling for my little fib.

After querying with me what I was drinking that particular night, I told him Bombay Sapphire & Tonic – at the time my preferred gin – so he orders one, and of course loves it.

Now I’m not what exactly possessed me to suddenly come up with the utter horse manure comment that I did, but needless to say, it’s one of the best things I’ve ever done with my life. I simply remarked as he was sipping away,

‘The best thing about G&T is that you don’t get a hangover because the tonic water keeps you hydrated’

Boom! The next thing he remembers is waking up the next morning with the mother of all hangovers, sat there cursing me from his bed.

But since then I have had some heavy nights on various drinks, and it made me think about which type of alcohol makes you feel the worst the next day. We all know cruise ship cocktails and measures are pretty generous, so below is my list of booze in order of safest to deadliest:

10) Cider – A tried and tested drink which most of us have been drinking since before the legal age! My top tip for reducing the hangover is to eat something bread based just before you hit the pillow.

9) Cocktails – Now of course the menu is pretty diverse when it comes to cocktails, but try to stick on something that only contains one or max two different spirits, like Mojitos, or Sex on the Beach – they are full of ice generally, which means water – just what you need to keep the brain swell at bay.

8) Prosecco – Knock off champagne by any other name, this stuff will initially give you a light headed feeling but because it’s so gassy, you are only going to be able to manage a bottle at best. Bang down a few canapes between drinks and you shouldn’t feel too bad the next day.

7) Brandy – Mix this fruit based drink with coke or lemonade in single measures and the after effects are much kinder the next day.

6) White Wine – A nice crisp Sauvignon Blanc when stretched out over the course of an evening will give you the drunk feeling much earlier, and chances are if you stay on the stuff and take it fairly sensibly, you will have sobered up by the time you hit the hay.

5) Whisky – Now we start to edge towards the dangerous end of the list. I love whisky like a brother, and in my experience you are better off with a single malt or grain if you want to avoid a really nasty hangover. It’s a slow sipping drink so as long as you don’t get too carried away you should be slightly warmer that your average corpse the next day.

4) Gin & Tonic – A wonderful crisp drink that is enjoyment in every sip, and yes you are drinking water with it, which can reduce the effects in my own experience. However this little swine will creep up on you like a rabid dog and take you down when you least expect it!

3) Lager – The pub goers favourite and the best selling beer type of all time, viewed as a girly version of ale years ago by some, but believe me this stuff can be a killer the next day. I recently had a full night on the lager, which is rare as I usually only have a couple of pints before moving on, but after 7 or 8 pints over the course of the night, I was an absolute write off the next day – my tip, avoid!

2) Red Wine – Another big big favourite of mine, but red wine is associated with the one thing that I cannot cope with in my old age, the headache! Yes for some reason red wine gives me a terrible headache, if you drink 3 or 4 glasses of this stuff it’s hard to avoid it, sometimes the headache hits me as I’m actually drinking it! The European wines are the worst for it, a heavy Rioja, as nice as it is, will drop you Mike Tyson, and give you the headache that feels like you’ve been punched by him!

………….. and finally to number 1! Drum Roll Please………actually no drums my head is killing from the wine………

1)  SHOTS!

Of course it’s shots! We all know the night takes a massive turn for the worst when someone shouts this crazy little word! My god the state I have been in over the years when you decide to ‘line em up’ up the bar. People will say vodka is bad, but vodka is for the weak. The worst shot you can have by a distance is a Czech poison, better known as Absinth…….and believe me when I tell you that this is going to make you want to quit booze forever. Legally in this country a bar may only serve you two shots because of the high alcohol content. The story goes that Einstein was smashed of his face on Absinth when he discovered the theory of relativity, such are the hallucinogenic properties of this deadly green stuff! That’s how strong it is!

Other shots to avoid, are Sambuca, Ouzo, and of course Tequila. Again I can only tell you form personal experience that all of these liquids will help you lose a day of your life.

So there you have it, my guide to drinking on a cruise ship, or just drinking in general!

I’m actually not that big a drinker in recent times, but when you have a night on something, it haunts you for a long time, and we can all remember what a rocket hangover feels like.

Have I missed anything? Have you had shocking experiences with anything else? Would love to know! I may even give them a try!

Thanks for reading my thoroughly irresponsible blog, and as always, until next time………
