A Weekend In The Lake District

It seems like I have gone through most of the year without a break and now holidays are starting to look like buses – they all arrive at once!

Thursday morning will see me packing my bags again and heading to Windermere for a 50th birthday weekend in the Lake District. Lake Windermere is 10.5 f miles long and 219 feet deep making it England’s largest lake. Its name comes from the Scandinavian for ‘lake of a man called Vinandr’ – which sound very Viking to me !

My friend Jane has organised the weekend for a group of us to celebrate her birthday. She has booked a lovely house in Windermere for the whole weekend, it is called Orrest Head House and Cottage. The house was  built in 1672 and stands at the head of Windermere Village in over 2 acres of beautiful private grounds which it shares with  Orrest Head Cottage. It has direct access on the path to Orrest Head, one of the finest short walks in The Lake District. Better get my walking boots packed I suppose!

Not that the weekend will be all fresh air and walking, there will be some partying and shopping too. Windermere is home to Lakeland, the cookware shop, in fact it is the largest one in the country – and it opens everyday including Sundays.

There will be lots of good food and wine, a visit to a local restaurant on Sunday and a birthday party on Saturday night. Oh and we all have to bake a cake to take with us, as there are 17 of us that’s an awful lot of cakes !

I will be away from the office from tomorrow afternoon, back Tuesday next week – no doubt a good few pounds heavier!
