Virgin Voyages has just confirmed that the line’s first ever cruise ship will be taking guests to the popular port of Havana.
Cuba is the first destination announced for the upcoming adult-only ship, Scarlet Lady, after already announcing it will be based in Miami and will sail the Caribbean.
In developing the new cruise line, Virgin has been seeking input from potential passengers on both the appearance of the new ship and its itinerary.
“We used research from customers as well as travel partners in the U.S. and U.K. to learn that Cuba is one of the places voyagers would most like to visit,” Branson commented.
“Having got the chance to enjoy a fascinating trip to Cuba myself last year, I can certainly see why.”
It is still to be revealed how often the ship will visit Havana, but what Virgin have revealed is that all stops on the island will include an overnight stay.
Guests can expect dates to be released sometime next year.
Activities on offer will include touring Old Havana, dancing at a salsa club, exploring architecture, and interacting with locals.
“Virgin Atlantic has been visiting Cuba for 13 years, and I cannot wait to see our iconic Scarlet Lady gleaming in the Havana Harbor,” Virgin Group founder Richard Branson has stated.
“Havana is the perfect place for our sailors to go and experience a city that exudes an irresistible energy and passion.”
He said that the destination is “one of my favorites in the world.”
Scarlet Lady will bring “The Modern Romance of Sailing” concept to the seas, featuring ample lounge space and a Test Kitchen restaurant, but none of the water slides and other amenities that cater to cruise passengers with children.
“Virgin Voyages will service a new demographic of travelers to Cuba, which will greatly benefit the Cuban economy and the Cuban people,” said Collin Laverty, president of Cuba Educational Travel.
“The Virgin brand is a perfect match for the incredible music, art and dance that Cuba offers.”
