Hard Hit Malaysia Air Bans UK Travellers From Flying With Luggage

Hard Hit Malaysia Air Bans UK Travellers From Flying With Luggage

It’s been a rough couple of years for Malaysia Air following the loss of two Boeing 777 aircraft within 131 days of each other with 537 passengers and crew lost.

Whilst today’s announcement isn’t anywhere near on the same scale, it’s still bad news for a firm already hard hit with bad publicity and struggling to regain its reputation and customers trust.

In a press release sent out today Malaysia Airlines have informed all their passengers that they wont be able to check in any luggage for their European flights.

The ban, which takes effect from today, will apply to all London, Paris and Amsterdam flights.

A statement from the company said it was unable to carry any luggage in the cargo hold due to the fact it is “currently operating a long route to Europe”.

They went on to explain that “combined with unseasonably strong headwinds” this was limiting their ability to transport any luggage.

“This longer flight path consumes more jet fuel and for safety reasons, Malaysia Airlines has had to impose temporary limitation on checked in baggage allowance. From tonight, 5 January 2016 (until further notice), the airline will only be able to accommodate cabin baggage of up to 7kg – one piece totaling 7kg per  Economy Class passengers and two pieces totaling 14kg (up to 7kg per piece) for Business/First Class passengers. Connecting passengers travelling on Oneworld member carriers with through check in may also have their baggage offloaded due to this operational constraint”.

Although passengers will still be able to check luggage, alternate arrangements were being made to transport this to Europe and it was unclear when it would arrive.

The airline was keen to confirm however that they were taking this unusual step with passengers safety in mind and that “Malaysia Airlines will continue to assess the changing situation over the region and will update passengers when operations are back to normal. Safety remains the centre of the airline’s operations.”

What’s your thoughts?

Would you be happy flying with an airline under these conditions and having to wait for your luggage to arrive separately?

Do you have a flight booked with Malaysia Air?

Will this ban be affecting you?
