David Walliams, Raj and Windy Mindy. A family day out.

On Sunday I took my family to the theatre to see David Walliams and a fun time was had by all.

The event, to promote his new children’s book ‘The Midnight Gang’ was held to raise money for Birmingham Children’s Hospital and I had been advised of the event by a friend who’s son has been under their care.

The show, at the Birmingham Symphony Hall was essentially an interview with David Walliams, he was quizzed by CBBC presenter Katie Thistleton and shared with us stories of his childhood  and insights into the characters featured in his 9 children’s novels, who they are based upon, who his favourites are and why he wrote them.

David and Katie both wore pyjamas in line with the children featured in the new book, who are all patients in a children’s hospital and set off on amazing adventures each evening. Mr Walliams read extracts from this book and others he has written, and as you would expect his delivery was fantastic. He has a wonderful stage presence and came across much more confident than his host and engaged both the adults and children in the audience.

He had the audience in fits as he read ‘Windy Mindy’ a short story from ‘The World’s Worst Children’ featuring poor Mindy and her amazing talent for trumping. I thought Milo was  going to fall of his chair he was laughing so much.

Raj

Before the show began, we were able to mix with the characters from Walliams’s books and Milo was given sweets by Raj.

We made him have his photo taken as Mr Stink too, as he also has ‘Windy Mindy’ trouble ( I secretly think that this is because I am a good mother and make him eat plenty of greens.)

And after the show we were able to purchase signed copies of the book for face value, which is a great momento to have

I am not normally a huge fan of David Walliams and  his adult comedy but he does a lot for promoting reading to children and working with schools and whilst this was essentially a show to promote himself and his book, it was enjoyable and entertaining and helped to raise money for a very worthwhile cause. Thank you David Walliams.
