Transatlantic myths debunked

On Tuesday I spent the day on QM2 having a look around and learning lots about this fantastic ship.

QM2 spends most of her time going backwards and forwards between Southampton and New York with a few visits to other places during the year but she was specifically designed for crossing the Atlantic and you really can tell.

She feels solid.  It’s hard to explain but you can tell she’s an Ocean Liner rather than a Cruise Ship, fully equipped to face anything the Atlantic Ocean throws at her.

She’s absolutely stunning inside and the staff are so helpful and friendly – nothing is too much trouble.

The cabins are furnished beautifully and to a high standard and all of the interior areas are clean.

I’ve always been a bit unsure about sailing on QM2 and doing a Transatlantic crossing as having children, I thought all of those days at sea might be a bit too much for them (and consequently, me) to handle if they’re bored.  I’ve had a lot of customers with the same concerns but fear not!  She has a retractable roof over one of the pools meaning that even if the weather isn’t great, they can still swim (which is all mine seem to want to do when we’re away!)

And kids clubs galore!

And while they’re having a ball, you can get some much needed R&R in the Spa.

There’s so much going on on board.  One of my favourite areas was the Winter Garden.  It’s a garden.  But indoors.  And they serve afternoon tea.  What more could you want?

The food was outstanding.  We ate in Todd English which is one of the speciality restaurants but were served a menu from the main Britannia Restaurant.  The starter of crab and smoked salmon was lovely.  We then had a mushroom soup and I chose the crusted cod as my main course.  The one course everyone was waiting for was this.  The Rocky Road Souffle.  The best I’ve ever had and I think those with me would agree.  It was outstanding.

It was all gooey and chocolatey and runny and….yum.

Seeing the ship really changed my view of the Transatlantic crossing and it’s definitely something I will consider for a future holiday now that I know how much there is to do on board for both adults and children – especially with the fantastic offers Cunard have on these sailings.  Have you cruised on QM2 or do you plan to? What do you think of her?  I’d love to hear your thoughts.
