Tunisian National Guard and Border Police required – Is it really worth a visit?

We all know when travelling to different countries and cultures it pays to be vigilant in order to stay safe, that goes without saying, but I recently read an article regarding the cruise port of Tunisia (La Goulette) which made me wonder if things haven’t just got a little out of hand.

Tunisia’s Office of Shipping and Ports, responsible for the management of La Goulette port, has recently taken steps to reinforce security and safety measures both shoreside and waterside for visiting cruise ships and passengers. There was a recent meeting between various ministerial departments, shipping agents, tour operators and Customs and Border Police to discuss the security and safety of visiting passengers both at the port and during shore excursions within the country.

As a result of this meeting the following safety and security reinforcements have been put in place. There will now be a permanent ‘zodiac control’ (whatever that is, but it sounds serious!) around the cruise ships by the National Guard, the presence of the Border Police team has been stepped up and a minimum of two armed guards will patrol any ship berthed in port.

Border Police will also step up monitoring of access badges at the entrance to the port and searches of taxi cabs, buses and any other vehicles accessing the Tourist Village at La Goulette Cruise Terminal will be undertaken using search dog mirrors and metal detectors. Scanners will also be utilised for passengers returning from tours and for all staff accessing the cruise terminal.

Sounds like fun right? A relaxing cruise holiday coupled with the kind of procedures more associated with a maximum security incarceration facility! Now correct me if I’m wrong but if the National Guard, Border Police and armed patrols are required in order to make the area safe – it simply can’t be safe! None of us want to be dictated to by the more unsavoury elements of society and we of course have the right to travel to virtually any we want but let’s face it – armed patrols and the National Guard – surely not conducive to a relaxing, enjoyable holiday experience.

So following these new safety and security procedures will you be rushing out to book your next cruise to Tunisia any time soon? I wonder if like me you’re think it’s simply not worth it. Sorry Tunisia but life’s too short (maybe even shorter in Tunisia by the sounds of things!).

Let me know what you think, bye for now.
