The Dancing Queens – 100 Days And Counting.

Valentine’s Day marked the 100 day countdown to Cunard’s 175th Anniversary Celebrations in Liverpool, the home of Cunard. The city will host a summer of events including a recreation of the first-ever transatlantic crossing from the city to America and a meeting of the “Three Queens” cruise ships. The Queen Mary, the Queen Elizabeth and the Queen Victoria will rendezvous on the Mersey on May 25. and in a salute to their spiritual home, will perform a series of synchronised manoeuvres, a kind of ‘riverdance’ at the Pier Head.

The backdrop to the celebrations will include the Cunard building, which was the world headquarters of the Cunard Shipping Line until the 1960s. Queen Mary 2 will arrive in Liverpool on May 24 and make her first ever overnight stay in the city, the following morning, on May 25, Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria will sail into the city and for a time all three ships will line up on the Mersey.

 

 

Up to one million spectators are expected to gather as Cunard’s three Queens perform their magnificent salute to its ‘spiritual home’ of Liverpool which begins a seven-week long programme of events. The official 100 day digital countdown clock was unveiled by the Chair of Merseytravel, Councillor Liam Robinson at the Mersey Ferries Pier Head Terminal.

Unveiling the clock, Councillor Liam Robinson the Chairman of Merseytravel said, “Three Queens, One Magnificent City will be a unique moment in Merseyside maritime history, the Fleet Is Coming – in 100 days!”

 

I don’t know about you but I think it’s great in this disposable day and age that we can take time out to remember and celebrate some of the great traditions of our past.
