Cruises no longer just for ‘Old People’…..It’s Official.

Cruising holidays have come a long way since the Cunard Line Britannia first left British waters bound for America 175 years ago.  Nowadays there is more choice than ever, so many different types of cruise ship for so many types of cruise passenger. You have ‘Movies Under The Stars’, water parks at sea, surf simulators. floating rock festivals and even the chance to go skydiving…..so it surprises me even now that I still hear the same old phrase, ‘cruising is for old people isn’t it?’.

Well for all of you who may still think that way, officially it’s not!

A recent survey has published that age group 25 to 34 is now the second largest demographic of cruise customers in Britain. The survey commissioned by the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) shows that this younger age group is now just one percentage point behind the 65 plus age group which arguably you would traditionally associate with cruising.

Dear elderly couple holding hands.

ABTA said…

“Of people aged 25-34, 12% of holidaymakers in this age group took a cruise in the last year. 25-34 year olds are also the most interested in taking cruise holidays with almost half (48%) stating that they were interested in trying a cruise.” adding that “15% of young families (those with children under five) who took a holiday in the last 12 months took a cruise”.

Cruise line officials have long said that the industry has suffered for a long time from an image problem in Britain, whereby cruises are viewed suitable only for elderly people, well it would appear things are changing in that regard.

Last year, 1.65 million Britons took a cruise, are you one of them? Do you still consider cruising a holiday for the elderly or have you considered taking the plunge and giving cruising a go?

I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Bye for now.
