‘Boa Equipe Sorte GB!’

Translates to Good luck Team GB!

As the Olympic game’s kick off on Friday 5th August (well it will actually be on Saturday morning because of the time difference) how will Brazil square up as hosts? Will the beautiful city of Rio de Janeiro live up to its Carnival reputation?

Rio is an amazing city. I stayed in Rio for 2 nights at the end of a transatlantic cruise from Italy about 7 years ago. The City is colourful, lively and has the most amazing beach!

Copacabana beach is 2.5 mils of white sand vibrant with activities. Locals playing volleyball and soccer. Everyone seems to have a dog! Walking along the mosaic promenade was lovely and even better enjoying a drink at one of the huts! Watch out for Caipirinha! It is a very strong rum cocktail with lime and sugar! I had 1 but my brother-in-law had rather a lot and regretted it in the morning when we went on our trip to Sugar Loaf Mountain!

Sugar Loaf Mountain is a peak in the Atlantic with great views over Rio. The peak is 396 meters high and a cable car takes you to the top in about 10 minutes. It was so cloudy when we visited. I was hopeful that the clouds would clear but unfortunately it just got worse! We could see nothing because we were actually in the cloud!

Watching over the people of Rio is the statue of Christ the Redeemer.

It is a breath-taking view as you look up at the huge statue which took nearly 10 years to construct! We travelled by taxi to the base of the statue and then a little train took us the rest of the way. There is a small chapel call Nossa Senhora Aparecida at the base of the statue. I lit a candle and said a prayer for my grandparents.

I am looking forward to watching the Olympics.

Good luck to Tom Daley, Mo Farah and Chris Froome who are gold medal hopefuls!

I will be cheering them on and the rest of team GB!

Will you be watching?

What is your favourite sport?

Thanks for reading
