Is the increasing internet connectivity on cruise ships going to be a good thing ?

Some cruise companies are now stepping up their game when it comes to the internet connectivity options that they will offer their clientèle.

Oceania cruises for example are going to offer free internet to clients staying in higher tier staterooms and Royal Caribbean have just announced their ultra high speed internet connectivity on their new Quantum class of ships.

Of course internet has been available on cruise ships for a good while now but has never been that popular due to the fact that speeds were slow, the service could be intermittent and it was also quite expensive.

As technology moves on I can foresee that there will be a time in the probably not too distant future where very reasonably priced, fast internet connectivity will be available everywhere, even on cruise ships and while this does sound good in the most part I do sometimes wonder where this is all going.

Whilst I was on my recent holiday in Turkey there was free wifi at the hotel,  when I looked around the sunbeds by the pool there were so many people were sat their looking at their phones. Also it seemed quite an annoyance if there were connectivity problems.

Whilst all of this connectivity can be very useful, it all has to be in moderation I think. Sometimes some people seem so connected to the on-line world they seem to almost forget about the real one.

There was one use of technology that did make me laugh whilst I was on holidays.  There was a young girl that was on holidays with her friend and one of the Turkish guys behind the bar had obviously become somewhat acquainted with her. Imagine his face when she was stood at the bar and passed him a phone and he said “What’s this ?”, she said “It’s my mum on video Skype”.  She then passed him the phone whilst saying “Say hi to my new boyfriend mum”, the look on his face was a picture !

What do you think about all this new connectivity, is it all good or can it sometimes cause annoyance ?
