Rivers – A little further afield.

As discussed last week River Cruising is going crazy on all our European waterways. But for those of you who like something a little different and want more adventure or history then just take a look at these.                                                                     The Irrawaddy in Burma has very recently become attractive to the British River cruisers. The area reflects this Buddhist land’s unhurried peace as centuries old pagoda and shrines float by.

A Yangtze cruise will take you through spectacular Three Gorges which gives an image of China that road or air travel cannot see. With the top historic sights such as The Great Wall, Terracotta Army and The Forbidden City not being on a river you will need to book an escorted land tour to experience these.

For the adventurous try the Colonial style vessels that sail along the Mekong. This offers time honoured traditions and Far Eastern Cultures. Journeys start and finish north or southbound between Siem Reap in Cambodia and Ho Chi Minh City. You can sail further upstream in Laos, between Chiang Rai and Pakse.

On the Amazon, water lilies grow up to 6 ft wide and you may even seen the pink dolphins. There is a vast range of bird and wild life in this region.

All the rivers I have talk about these past two weeks are featured in several tour operators programmes. The newest river company is Emerald Waterways  but we sell The River Cruise Line, Viking, Apt, Ama, Avalon, Titan, Tauck and Uniworld to name but a few.  I do hope you have found this of interest and maybe one day you too will experience one of these amazing trips
