Lost in Venice at 2am

Although I have been to Venice before and stayed very central I agreed to stay in Mestre on my pre night stay before boarding the MSC Preziosa on my recent work trip. Myself and three colleagues all meet up very excited in Manchester and decided we would have a quiet night before joining the others on board the next day. But when our Directors also boarded our plane and asked us to join them for drinks in St. Marks Square what could we say?. We dropped our bags and headed into town on what should have been a 20 euro cab ride but ended up being almost 40. Me in heels we made our way via a water taxi on a very wet evening. People were wearing weird plastic leg warmer type things over their feet and the nearer to the square we got we could see why. It has hard to tell where the canals ended and the walkways began. At last we arrived, and a very pleasant evening was had by all. We all said our goodbyes and looked forward to meeting up again the next day.  This was 12.30am ish and we headed back to our hotel.  Have you seen those streets at that time of night in the wet.

Off came the heels and we headed in the direction of the water taxi landing stations but oh no this was not to be. Round and round up and over many bridges and canals but getting no where fast. We then bumped into our Directors who were also lost but at least they were staying on the Island. We could just image the local Police sitting in their office watching us on CCTV saying just look at those lost British Tourist, we were totally lost. By this time getting quite distraught not to mention tired and wet. At last we found a boat station but was 2am so we had a long wait. Four hours later and 200 euros poorer we arrived back at our hotel in Mestre. That will teach us trying to save money. But gave us a good giggle for the next few days. It was a very eventful journey back .
