Thomson announce the name of their new addition

Last week Thomson cruises announced their new ship launching in May 2018 will be called the Tui Explorer and be based from Palma. The ship at the moment is operating as the Mein Scheiff 1, which is under the German Tui Cruises.  The Tui Explorer will become the largest ship in Thomson’s fleet and will have a capacity of 1924 passengers.

Funchal, Portugal - January 14, 2014: The cruise ship "Mein Schiff 1" at the harbor of Funchal is owned and operated by TUI Cruises. It was built as a Century class for 1924 passengers and 780 crew people. The ship was renamed Mein Schiff in Hamburg on 15 May 2009 ,before it called MV Galaxy.

There will be some features on the Tui Explorer which will include:

  • indigo – This will be where you can find the casino and nightclub, and will be located at the top of the ship
  • Scoops – An ice-cream parlour (this is where my nick will spend his time if we sail on her)
  • Apertif – a bar for pre and post dinner drinks.
  • The ship will also have 10 eating venues on board and will include the new sushi counter – Umi Sushi
  • There will be also be a dining venue which will have a glass roof and be home to two restaurants – the pizzeria and also a Tapas restaurant.
  • The spa on board will have 11 different areas which will include an adults only sun bed area called the Veranda, there will be a Finnish Sauna which will have floor to ceiling windows, two luxury treatment rooms and a couples room.
  • There will be an indoor cinema
  • New Kids Club with children’s pool and slide.

The ship will also have 14 family balcony cabins which will be 20 square metres and can sleep up to 5 people – which will be great as not many cruise lines offer cabins for more than 4,  unless buying a suite or paying for 2 cabins and trying ton get them interconnecting/opposite.

The inside cabins will measure 16 square metres which will be bigger than any other standard inside cabins within the fleet – I have to admit this is the one thing that has put me off cruising with Thomson as I do tend to book an inside cabin (so I can have another cruise later in the year) but have seen’heard the inside cabins are small.

The ship will operate on 4 itineraries – Cosmopolitan Classics, Highlights of the Mediterranean, Magic of Spain and the Mediterranean secrets. Ports of call will include Barcelona, Naples, Rome, Florence and Lisbon

Have you cruised with Thomson before and do you think the Tui Explorer will make a good new addition to the Thomson fleet?

Have a good couple of weeks – hopefully the sun stays now
