Half Marathon Madness

For some crazy reason I have decided to run a half marathon this Sunday and I’m blaming my son entirely.

Earlier this year Milo broke his leg and it was a nasty break with 10 weeks in a cast and 10 weeks of physio. During  the recuperation period we had to keep encouraging him to do his exercises and as supportive parents we were constantly telling him to push himself, challenge himself and go outside of his comfort zone.

This got me thinking, I have run 2 half marathons in the past, the last being 4 years ago. The first one I finished slower than I’d have liked and the second I was slower still. At this point I gave up long distance running deciding that it really wasn’t worth all the training effort and blisters for disappointment on the day.

However whilst desperately trying to encourage Milo to get back up to strength I could hear the voices in my head, I am not one to be hypocritical and it felt wrong to be pushing him if I’m not prepared to push myself. So I have dusted off my trainers, bought some anti blister socks and entered the Worcester Half Marathon.

I have sort of rushed my training, I only had the epiphany at the start of the school holidays and only entered the race 2 weeks ago. The goal this time is to run and enjoy it and ideally not be any slower than the last time, as my partner keeps telling me  I am 4 years older. I also hadn’t really clicked that I am running at the end of the busiest week of the year for a cruise agent and I am currently a little bit tired.

However, I am looking forward to a few days of carbs and plenty of jelly sweets and the best thing of it all, is that I think I have inspired my son, he did stick with his exercises and has pushed himself and this weekend he is finally going back to his ‘tricking class’ (gymnastics for nutters), 6 months after breaking his leg there.

Please wish us both luck.
